Biography
Alicia Williams is a gifted
actress, writer and motivational speaker. The Detroit
native
received a Bachelor’s of Art Degree in African-American Studies from the
University of Kentucky. Alicia immersed herself in college life by
joining the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, working as a radio disc jockey
and forming Circle of Imani, a collegiate woman’s support group. Using
the support group as a platform, Alicia facilitated workshops, retreats
and performances for the Charles Young Community Center, which addressed
concerns involving self-esteem, abstinence and family issues. For her
dedication and leadership, she was honored with the Spirit Award by the
University as well as having a legacy established in the form of “The
Alicia Williams Outstanding Scholarship Award”.
While at the University, Alicia
found her niche in acting. Her first performance was A Long Time
Since Yesterday for the Message Theatre. Armed with determination
and a dream, Alicia auditioned for the prestigious American Musical and
Dramatic Academy in New York City. As fate would have it, she received a
scholarship and headed to The Big Apple. After graduating from AMDA,
Alicia appeared in numerous regional theatrical productions,
commercials, sketch-comedy shows, and worked as a stand-up comedian. She
has written a full-length play, I Sing My Sister’s Song, which
was performed as a reading for the esteemed Barnard College Columbia
University Department of Theater.
After relocating to North Carolina,
Alicia created a drama ministry for her church. Her skills led her to
write, direct and train seasoned actors as well non-theatrical adults
and children. Her comedic timing and knack for creating memorable
characters allowed her to land the plum roles of “Ma” in Amazing
Grace for the celebrated Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and “Ms.
Baker” for the African-American Children’s Theatre stage adaptation of
Boyz in the Hood.
Alicia’s love for historical events
and figures led her to write and tour her first one-woman show, Reflections from a Time Past. With garnered success of her dramatic
presentation, Alicia was commissioned by the Mecklenburg Public Library
and Charlotte Opera to write and perform a presentation depicting
Margaret Garner, The Mourner’s Bench.
Dedicated to using her talents to
affect the lives of many, Alicia was inspired to write and publish her
first book Up From Rock Bottom, a poignant work that is meant to
encourage and strengthen people who have experienced or are experiencing
their darkest hours. Alicia is currently working on a stage version of
Up From Rock Bottom and expects to tour the show when the book
hits the shelves in the Fall.
